Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, a part of University of Missouri Health Care, announced plans to affiliate with MD Anderson Cancer Network™, a program of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, on March 21, 2014.
MD Anderson Cancer Network was created to advance MD Anderson's mission to eliminate cancer by collaborating with community hospitals and health systems nationwide on quality improvement and best practices.
Ellis Fischel Cancer Center is the first academic certified member of MD Anderson Cancer Network. In addition to Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, the University of Missouri Health System includes MU Health Care hospitals, University Physicians clinics, the MU School of Medicine, the MU School of Health Professions and the MU Sinclair School of Nursing.
Since U.S. News & World Report began its annual “Best Hospitals” survey in 1990, MD Anderson Cancer Center has been named one of the top two in cancer care — and No. 1 for 10 of the past 13 years.
"Ellis Fischel Cancer Center and MD Anderson have a shared philosophy of providing multidisciplinary cancer care, dating back to the 1940s when each cancer hospital was established," said MU Health Care CEO Mitch Wasden. "We also share a common goal of wanting to eliminate cancer."
"We recognize that winning the fight against cancer is going to require innovation, continuous quality improvement and teamwork," Wasden said. "That's why the experts at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center felt a responsibility, as the region's largest, multi-specialty cancer group, to work collaboratively with a national leader in cancer care, MD Anderson."
"To become a certified member of MD Anderson Cancer Network, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center underwent a rigorous quality review," Wasden said. "We follow strict quality standards and clinical protocols at Ellis Fischel, and we're honored that our excellent quality of care has been recognized by MD Anderson Cancer Network."
Ellis Fischel Cancer Center is the first state cancer center built west of the Mississippi River. In 2013, all inpatient and outpatient cancer care was consolidated in a new, $50 million Ellis Fischel Cancer Center facility at University Hospital.
Today, Ellis Fischel is the only cancer center in the region to provide screening, diagnosis and treatment all under one roof. Cancer specialists at Ellis Fischel care for patients from nearly every county in the state through inpatient and outpatient services in Columbia, Mo., and extensive outreach efforts throughout the state.
In recognition of the services it provides to residents across the state, the Missouri General Assembly designated Ellis Fischel Cancer Center as Missouri's official state cancer center in 2004.
"This collaboration will give patients in Missouri access to the expertise of a world-renowned cancer center close to home," said Paul Dale, MD, medical director of Ellis Fischel Cancer Center. "Ellis Fischel Cancer Center already offers the region's only facility with inpatient and outpatient prevention, diagnosis and treatment services such as radiation therapy and infusion therapy. Now, we will be supplementing the depth and breadth of our many cancer specialists with that of the cancer experts at MD Anderson."
"Our affiliation with MD Anderson Cancer Network will be beneficial when we see patients with rare forms of cancer or unusual patterns of reoccurrence," Dale said. "Often with complex or rare cancers, there may be controversy over the best treatments to use. The experts at MD Anderson see huge volumes of patients, so their experience, and the opportunity to consult with them, will be invaluable."
The affiliation agreement between Ellis Fischel and MD Anderson Cancer Network was approved by the University of Missouri System Board of Curators at the curators' meeting on Jan. 31.
